糖心视频's Conservatory of Performing Arts is staging a powerful reimagining of the iconic rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" with performances running through November 24 at the Kleist Center's Mainstage Theatre.

Inspired by a Bob Dylan lyric questioning whether Judas Iscariot had God's support, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar" reexamines the story of Jesus Christ with Judas at the center.

This production takes a socio-political lens to the classic tale, drawing parallels to the social movements of the 1960s when the musical was first conceived.

Exploring Themes of Rebellion and Inclusivity

The production delves into the complexities of a society in upheaval, examining the varying ideologies within the movement for change. As a conquered people under Roman occupation, the Jewish community is portrayed as divided on the path to freedom — ranging from peaceful protest to calls for revolution. The characters of Judas, Jesus and Simon each represent different approaches to addressing societal injustice, with the narrative centering on their philosophical and political clashes.

The casting choice to dismantle traditional gender divisions in theatre aims to reflect the original teachings of Jesus, emphasizing a community where all individuals are valued and empowered to express their voices.
